The unsuitability of polythene for movable weight-bearing prostheses; report of a case of cup arthroplasty of the hip.

چکیده
Polythene is a synthetic thermo-plastic material formed by the polymerisation of the gas ethylene (C2H4). The polymer produced is a hydro-carbon of high molecular weight, belonging to the paraffin series, the carbon chain being 1 000 to 2,000 carbon atoms long. It Ilas, therefore, the stability and high resistance to chemical change characteristic of ordinary paraffins, but at the same time possesses considerably better mechanical properties. Being a hydro-carbon it is insoluble in and not wetted by water or tissue fluids. It absorbs water very slightly but even after prolonged immersion gains less than 0 05 per cent in weight. Polythene would seem to be an ideal material for implantation purposes in view of the above chemical properties. Animal experiments which we have carried out, and the findings of other investigators (Brown et al. 1947, Ingraham el al. 1947, Clagett et al. 1948, I)onovan and Zimmermann 1949, Seybold et al. 1949, Grindlay and Mann 1948, Busch ci al. 1949, Condon and Harper 1949, \‘eager and Cowley 1948) have encouraged us in this belief.

Fatal Cobalt Cardiomyopathy Following Revision Total Hip Arthroplasty – A Brief Report with Review of Literature
Ceramic bearing surfaces are being increasingly used in young patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty. However, failures have been reported including fractures even with the newer third generation ceramics. The recommendedtreatment for fracture of ceramic bearing surfaces is complete synovectomy and revision total hip arthroplasty. However, disappointing results have also bee...
متن کاملHip Arthroplasty and its Revision in a Child: Case Report and Literature Review
Juvenile idiopathic arthritis is the leading cause of hip replacement in young children. However, arthroplasty in this population is challenging with several concerns about quality of the growing bone, young age for revision surgery, and difficulties in potential several revisions. In this study we introduce a case of a 12-year old who is one of the youngest patients to undergo revision hip art...
متن کاملSubchondral Insufficiency Fracture of the Femoral Head Treated with Core Decompression and Bone Void Filler Support
Subchondral insufficiency fracture of the femoral head (SIFFH) is characterized by acute onset hip pain without overt trauma. It appears as a low intensity band with bone marrow edema on T1-weighted MRI. The most common course of treatment is protected weight bearing for a period of several weeks. Total hip arthroplasty (THA) has been commonly used if the patient does not respond to the initial...

During the past 20 years, poximal femoral osteotomy has been forgotten because most orthopedic surgeon believed that total hip arthroplasty is the only treatment method for hip joint osteoarthritis. The disadvatages of proximal femoral osteotomy include: Uncertain results, prolonged rehabilitation time after surgery, little improvement in joint ROM and according tosome.euthors difficult subsequ...
متن کاملIn vivo implant fixation of carbon fiber-reinforced PEEK hip prostheses in an ovine model.
Carbon fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone (CFR/PEEK) is theoretically suitable as a material for use in hip prostheses, offering excellent biocompatibility, mechanical properties, and the absence of metal ions. To evaluate in vivo fixation methods of CFR/PEEK hip prostheses in bone, we examined radiographic and histological results for cementless or cemented CFR/PEEK hip prostheses in an ovi...
